Pradhan Mantri Kisan Yojana

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Yojana, in short PMKY, is a central sector scheme as part of the government’s effort to provide direct income support to small and marginal farmers financed by the union government. The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Yojana is India’s first-ever program to provide direct income support to poor farmers.

Under this scheme, all farmers who claim to be below the poverty line will be given financial assistance in the form of an annually recurring income that they can draw at will and in any month of their choice.

Objectives of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Yojana

● The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Yojana (PM-KISAN) is a national insurance scheme aiming to provide farmers with financial assistance.

● The PM-KISAN Scheme is a comprehensive insurance scheme that covers all types of agriculture-related risks, such as drought, floods, hailstorms, windstorms, and other natural calamities occurring in different parts of India.

● The policy covers 100% of income from agriculture up to Rs. 60000/- per annum for individuals and Rs. 15000/- per annum for married couples.

Benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Yojana

Some of the key benefits of the scheme are mentioned below:

1. Income support:

● The primary benefit of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Yojana is the minimum income support it provides to the farmers.

● Every eligible farmer family will receive Rs. 6000 annually across India. However, the amount is not given at once.

● It is divided into three equal instalments and metered four months apart. Hence, each farmer receives Rs. 2000 every four months, and the farmer can use this amount any way the farmer wants, as there is no guideline regarding how they should use the money.

2. Identification responsibility:

● While the responsibility of funding lies with the Government of India, identifying the beneficiaries is the State and Union Territory Governments’ duty.

● These governments shall identify which farmer families are eligible to avail of the scheme’s benefits.
